Jordan

The Country Jordan

General Information - Jordan At Glance

The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, a place which once captivated ancient travelers, continues to enthrall a new generation with its eclectic mix of modernity and tradition. Jordan is a land steeped in history. As the crossroads of the Middle East, our country has served as a strategic nexus; connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe. Since the dawn of civilization, Jordan's location and geography has given it an important role as a conduit for trade and communications; connecting the orient with the west.

From the enchanting red sands of Wadi Rum to the restless city centre of urban Amman, from the famous ruins of civilizations once forgotten to its less well-known natural environments, Jordan is a unique destination that is attracts visitors young and old to experience its countless wonders. We invite you to come and share them with us at the WAHO Jordan 2022 Conference.

Language

The official language of Jordan is Arabic, but English is widely spoken especially in the cities. French, German, Italian and Spanish are also spoken, but to a lesser extent.

Our Special WAHO Conference Tours

Full details of the tours are shown in the Tours brochure, which can be downloaded here.

Values & Traditions

Jordanians are extremely warm, friendly and hospitable, and are very proud of their typically Arab country. Our cuisine takes its several influences from North African, Persian, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern food, so we look forward to introducing you to many tasty treats.

Jordan is a primarily Muslim country, although the freedom of all religions is protected, so apart from a more relaxed dress code in the International hotels and on the beaches, very revealing clothing such as sleeveless low-necked tops and shorts worn in public places are not appropriate. It is advisable for both men and women to ensure that at least their shoulders and knees are covered when in the old downtown part of Amman, at religious sites and in the smaller towns, villages and countryside.

This follows local customs, it shows that you care about Jordanian culture and local people will respect you for doing so. When out and about on the tours, the usual sun protection such as hats and sunscreen as well as insect repellents are recommended, along with suitable comfortable footwear for walking. Open-toed sandals are not recommended.

To help with your packing, this is our suggested dress code for the WAHO Conference

Currency

The local currency is the Jordanian Dinar, symbol JD, also pronounced as “jaydee.” There are 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 JD notes. It is pegged to the US dollar and exchange rates are set daily by the Jordanian Central Bank.  The Dinar is divided into smaller denominations of 10 dirhams, 100 piastres or 1000 fils. The Fils is the most commonly used unit, so you may see prices written as 4,750 which means 4 JD and 750 fils.

Currency can be exchanged at major banks, official exchange booths and at most hotels. Street money changers should be avoided. ATMs are widely available. All major credit cards are accepted at hotels, restaurants and larger shops, including American Express, Visa, Diners Club, and MasterCard. Please note that many smaller shops still prefer cash payment in the Jordanian currency, and cash is essential for shopping in the local souks, where some great bargains can be found.

Electrical Current

220 AC volts, 50 cycles, requiring rounded two-prong wall plugs. Visitors from the US will need a transformer, which most hotels can provide.

Climate

October is normally a pleasantly warm autumn month, with average temperatures ranging between max 27.1°C (80.8°F) and min 13.8°C (56.8°F) in Amman. Bring along something light and warm for the evenings. To check weather forecasts, we recommend ArabiaWeather, our local weather forecasting source.

Local Time In October

Greenwich Mean Time plus 2 hours (G.M.T. + 2). Jordan is seven hours ahead of US Eastern Time.
